This honors seminar met on Monday nights from 5:00 to 7:30. I initially wanted to take the class not so much because of an interest in dance, but because I knew both of the professors. However, it ended up being different than I expected and I learned a lot about dance that has made me appreciate the skill even more. Not only did we practice movement and attend dance performances, but we had speakers from different areas of dance come to class to speak with us and had readings and assignments that helped us remain reflective and critical. This was one of the first honors seminars I've taken where I did not have a particularly strong passion for the subject beforehand. This actually made it more interesting to me because there was a lot more for me to learn. I also had the chance to participate in movement and dance exercises that made me focus on my body and push myself to do things I am not used to doing. For our final assignment, we are working in small groups to choreograph a 3-5 minute dance. It is difficult, especially since the other people in my group have dance experience and therefore understand how more of the moves work right away. It is more fun than I expected, though, and I am excited to see how the final piece comes together.
