Self-reflection: What did you learn about yourself (the way you prefer to work, how you tackle problems, deal with uncertainty, organize our work) during this project.
I learned a lot about myself over the course of this project. I have more fun and generally perform better with projects I feel passionate about, and this video gave me a chance to work on something like that. I also learned that I am not the most organized filmmaker and that perhaps I could work on creating a better strategy for organizing my footage before I begin editing in order to optimize the process. Dealing with uncertainty has never been something I have excelled at, but I feel more comfortable with it now. I have seen how projects that start with my uncertainty turn out and I know that I do not have to go into a project knowing exactly what I want.
Feedback: How do you feel about the feedback you got about your video? As you gave feedback to other students, what things do you notice in your classmate’s works? What was the most helpful kinds of feedback that you got, gave, or heard others give?
I really appreciated all of the feedback I got about my video. It was nice to know that everyone appreciated the project I reflected on and I liked hearing about certain things I need to improve. It was awesome to have other perspectives on my work since I was the only one who had really seen it besides my mom and a friend. I noticed a lot of different film styles in everyone else's work, which I thought was interesting. We all took different approaches to storytelling and they were all pretty effective. I think the most helpful feedback I heard for anyone was about getting the story to flow. The pacing of the video is important to me and I liked seeing and hearing how other people tackled that issue.
Future: What advice would you give to a classmate that was taking this class next semester before they start the Art of the Real Project. What have you learned from the process of making this project that you will apply to your final project.
I would tell them to focus on something they really care about because it makes the project a lot more fun and a lot easier. I would also tell them to try to stay organized in some way because it will make editing go a lot faster. For my final project, I will try to stay more organized and make a better plan ahead of time because I feel as though that could have helped me in this project.
